<ON SUICIDE> Emile Durkheim, 1897

His arrival is celebrated by the secularist left, vigorously attacked byCatholics and conservatives.

1914 31 July Jean Jaures, the great French socialist leader and thinker, assassinated.

Durkheim saw that suicide has a social dimension.

He concluded that the bodily gestures, visual images and words used in ritual mediate between how society works and words used in ritual mediate between how society works and what people understand about themselves. Society can translate its values into rituals which run the gamut from family occasions, courtesies on the street and greased wheels at work to religious prayer. A person engaged in ritual is involved in something outside him- or herself, though rituals bond people for reasons they cannot quite define; ritual is the 'elementary form' of social cohesion. Modern society is, however, in Durkheim's view, deeply suspicious of ritual; the capitalist economy in particular stresses formal, operational rules and slights the psychology of participation. Suicide thus seems a book which should have come after the Elementary Forms; the depressing consequences of egoism and anomie in particular become clearer, for in both the glue of ritual is absent.

Anomic currently at chronic levels in the economic world. Suicides resulting from this. constitution of anomic suicide.
